6 Things I Would Do If I Was Just Starting My Fitness and Health Journey

Starting a fitness and health journey can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. If I could go back to the beginning with the skills and expertise I have now as a bodybuilder and personal trainer, I’d focus on a few key actions to set myself up for long-term success. Whether you’re just starting or looking for a fresh approach, these six steps can help you build momentum and stay consistent.

1. Identify My “Why”

  • Why it matters: Knowing your “why” is the foundation of your journey. It’s the reason you’re starting and what will keep you going when motivation fades.

  • How to do it: Ask yourself why this matters to you. Do you want to feel more confident? Have more energy for your kids? Improve your mental health? Write it down and refer back to it often.

  • Pro tip: Make your “why” personal and specific. The stronger your connection to it, the more likely you are to seeing it through.

2. Vocalize My Goals to Everyone in My Life

  • Why it matters: Telling others about your goals builds accountability and creates a support system. When people know your plans, they’re more likely to cheer you on—or even join you!

  • How to do it: Share your goals with friends, family, or coworkers. Whether it’s hitting the gym three times a week or swapping takeout for home-cooked meals, let them know how they can support you.

  • Pro tip: Be specific when you share. For example, instead of saying, “I want to get healthier,” try, “I’m aiming to run a 5K in three months.”

3. Get Some Professional Help

  • Why it matters: Starting without guidance can lead to confusion, frustration, or even injury. A professional can give you a personalized plan and teach you the proper techniques.

  • How to do it: Consider hiring a personal trainer, nutritionist, or online coach. If that’s out of budget, look for reputable fitness apps or free resources from trusted experts.

  • Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to ask questions or adjust your plan. The goal is to find a routine that works for you and aligns with your needs.

4. Unfollow the Garbage Social Media Accounts

  • Why it matters: Social media can be inspiring, but it can also set unrealistic expectations or make you feel like you’re not doing enough.

  • How to do it: Unfollow accounts that promote quick fixes, unhealthy comparisons, or overly restrictive diets. Instead, follow trainers, dietitians, and athletes who focus on education, sustainability, and self-love.

  • Pro tip: Curate your feed to motivate you. Positive content that aligns with your goals will keep you inspired without added pressure.

5. Track Every Single Little Win

  • Why it matters: Tracking small wins helps you see progress, even when the scale isn’t moving. It’s a great way to build confidence and stay motivated.

  • How to do it: Keep a journal, use an app, or create a checklist to log your daily achievements. Celebrate things like drinking more water, hitting the gym, or cooking a healthy meal.

  • Pro tip: Reward yourself for consistency. Treat yourself to new workout gear or a relaxing self-care day when you hit a milestone.

6. Avoid Making a Complete 180 Lifestyle Change

  • Why it matters: Overhauling your entire routine overnight can be overwhelming and hard to maintain. Small, sustainable changes are more effective and less stressful.

  • How to do it: Instead of committing to 7 days of exercise or cutting out all your favorite foods, start with one or two changes. For example, swap soda for water or add a 10-minute walk to your day.

  • Pro tip: Build habits gradually. As one change becomes second nature, add another. This method ensures long-term success without feeling like you’re sacrificing everything at once.

If I were starting my fitness and health journey again, I’d focus on these six steps to build a solid foundation. Remember, the journey is about progress, not perfection. Take it one step at a time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or adjust your approach as you go.
