Training Clients Who Make The Most Progress Do These 5 Things

As a Kitchener-based personal trainer and online coach, I’ve noticed something consistent across my client base - at the beginning, everyone worries that they’re a little powerless to the process. This couldn't be further from the truth.
Everyone has a hectic schedule. Everyone deals with some sort of chronic injury or mobility issue. Everyone has a unique set of life experiences and genetics. However, everyone also has the capacity to stay dedicated and give 100% to their training and nutrition if they truly want to make a change.
No matter someone’s age, gender, unique background, or goals, these key behaviours always lead to the most progress amongst my clients:
They communicate about EVERYTHING
Whether it’s a scratchy throat, a long commute that disrupted their usual meal times, a particularly strong day at the gym, or feedback on a new healthy recipe they tried out over the weekend, they’re an open book. Good or bad, they’ll reach out to share their thoughts regarding training or nutrition and will openly communicate any wins or roadblocks that could affect progress. This information is so important for me as a coach and trainer, as I can use it to tailor their training or meals as needed - which can speed up progression.
They never ask for quick hacks
They place full trust in their plan and understand that with hard work, patience, and dedication, they’ll see results. Sustainable change comes with time, so staying away from fad supplements, crash diets, or trendy gimmicks gets them a lot further in the long run.
They consistently ask for feedback
Clients who send me form videos during their training sessions always improve faster than clients who never ask for feedback. This is for a few reasons:
I’m able to tweak any form, tempo, or intensity concerns, so they can adjust their training and execute their lifts properly
They’re always looking to progressively overload
Clients who want feedback are generally the most dedicated to their training and want to perform to the best of their abilities
They surround themselves with supportive people
It’s hard to focus on bettering yourself if the people in your life are always discouraging you from sticking to your training or nutrition plan. Clients who find like-minded people, train with others who share similar passions, or only follow social media accounts that align with their values can stay in a positive mindset and reach their goals.
They focus on the long-term goal
It can be hard to stick with the plan when results don’t occur in the span of one training session. Whether it’s a diet phase or a bulk, not every phase of the journey is going to be exciting or comfortable. But staying focused on the bigger picture instead of fighting the process always leads to better results.
